DWTA Shares Tips on How to Remove Stickers from the Windshield

The Detroit Windshield Technicians Association (DWTA) has shared some helpful tips on removing stickers from the windshield. DWTA President Peter Kinley says decals that have not been completely removed or stuck in the windshield can be unsightly. “Fortunately there are ways to remove these pieces of stickers without having to cause damage on the auto glass. This is because a removal that could be way too harsh can cause scratches on the windshield,” says Kinley in the DWTA web article.

Kinley says it is best to carefully remove the stickers and be patient than use drastic measures like using harsh chemicals.

DoItYourself.com suggests a way to cleanly peel off the sticker from the windscreen. In their step-by-step instructions they mentioned the use of soapy water to remove the adhesive part of the decal that usually gets stuck in the windshield.

“Step 1 - Peeling off the Sticker From the Glass Window -- Strip off as much of the sticker from the glass window of the car by hand. For the harder part of the sticker to remove, make use of a sharp razor blade to lightly scrape it off in a single direction. If the blade of the razor is dull, it will likely damage the glass surface where the sticker is stuck.”

Removing Sticky Adhesives

HowToCleanStuff.net likewise came up with its own version of effectively removing sticky decals from the windshield. In their instruction guide they suggested the use of an adhesive remover like acetone, WD-40, lacquer Thinner, Windex or Rubbing alcohol.

“Begin by working a corner of the decal loose with your fingernail or plastic scraper. Gently pull the decal off in a diagonal direction. Move slowly to remove as much as possible until the decal tears. You will be able to remove more of newer decals with this method. Once no more decal can be removed or if the decal is so old and stuck that the above steps haven’t worked, continue with an adhesive remover.”

Motoring magazine Top Gear also has its own suggestion on efficiently removing pesky stickers from the auto glass. In their online article, they mentioned the use of an old credit card, a glass cleaner, a micro fiber towel, and a liquid product that can be used to remove the adhesive like a WD-40.

“Begin by cleaning the glass surrounding the sticker with glass cleaner and wipe to dry with a microfiber towel. This takes away dust or abrasive debris from the surface prior to removing. With your spatula or plastic card, scrape off the sticker starting at the edge until your create a flap big enough to grab with your fingers. Usually automotive stickers, especially your LTO stickers, are highly adhesive so take your time as you peel. It is best to get the whole thing off in one go than having it break off in pieces.”
